ILE-50 Low Formaldehyde Emission Resin
ILE-50 Low Formaldehyde Emission Resin is liquid Urea Formaldehyde with low level of Formaldehyde emission. This resin is suitable for manufacturers of plywood, particle board, chipboard, Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF), and other wood workings who desire low Formaldehyde emission from the resin used and also from the resulted product.

JIS A 5908:2003 APPLICATION

ILE-50 Low Formaldehyde Emission Resin ILE-50 is a concentrate resin of low Formaldehyde emission. This adhesive is suitable for manufacture of Urea Formaldehyde Resin, and is recommended for use in particle board and Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) manufavturing. For this kind of application, ILE-50 Low Formaldehyde Emission Resin is in accordance to Japanese Industrial Standard JIS A 5908:2003, with product specifications as follows;

SUITABLE FILLER AND HARDENER

The suitable filler for glue mix on ILE-50 Low Formaldehyde Emission Resin is industrial grade wheat flour or other industrial flour, amounting to around 15-20 percent of the resin weight. For hardening purposes, we recommend the use of ILH-20 hardener which is suitable to make a good glue mix.


RECOMMENDED FORMULATION

ILE-50 Low Formaldehyde Emission Resin is best to be mixed into a glue mix according to the following formulation:

: 100 parts by weight
 Industrial grade wheat flour as filler
: 15-20 parts by weight
 ILH-20 Hardener
: 0.3-0.5 parts by weight

 

MIXING PROCEDURE

Aside from the formulation, certain steps should be followed in mixing for the glue mix, which are as follows;

  1. First pour all ILE-50 Low Formaldehyde Emission Resin and all the wheat flour.
  2. Add in the ILH-20 Hardener and mix for around 10-20 minutes to obtain a thorough  glue mix. The glue mix is then ready to be applied.

 

GEL TIME OF THE RECOMMENDED FORMULATION

The above recommended formulation will have a gel time that varies according to room temperature as follows:

VENEER PREPARATION

The veneers and cores must be prepared before applying ILE-50 Low Formaldehyde Emission Resin glue mix. Reddish colored veneers are recommended choice because the Formaldehyde emission from reddish veneers are relatively lower from yellow or white veneers. The moisture content must also be controlled at a maximum of 10% for face and back veneers, and also maximum of 8-10% for cores.

 

GLUE SPREAD

The amount of glue spread in usage of ILE-50 Low Formaldehyde Emission Resin depends on the thickness and smoothness of the cores. The glue spread should use double glue line, with about 28-32 g/sqft of glue for thinner cores, and 32–35 g/sqft for thicker cores. It is also recommended to use as small amount of glue as possible, as that means less Formaldehyde emission.

 

PRE-PRESS

Optimal pressure in pre-press is about 9-10 kg/cm2, but the press time will be a little bit longer compared to using other Urea Formaldehyde adhesives, for example 20 minutes, and it's also affected by ambient temperature and the wood's moisture content.

 

PANEL ASSEMBLY

The time for panel assembly should be as short as possible, although this glue mix for low emission plywood is relatively more stable than normal Urea Formaldehyde adhesives.

HOT PRESS TIME

Hot pressing in usage of ILE-50 Low Formaldehyde Emission Resin is best done in conditions as follows:

To have adequate heat transfer time, it is required to add additional time to the basic time, that depends on the distance to the farthest glue line (FGL). The required additional time (minutes/mm) is calculated as follows:

Example: 3-ply panel with 2 mm core and 0.8 mm face and back veneers. The required press time at 110°C is:

 Heat transfer time : 0.8 x 1.1 mm
 = 0.9 minutes
 Basic time
 :  = 1.0 minutes +
 Total press time
 :  = 1.9 minutes

Thus the press time for “Low Formaldehyde Emission Plywood” is about 1.3-1.4 times longer than required for normal “MR Plywood”.

PRESSURE AND TEMPERATURE

Optimum pressure for hot press is about 9-10 kg/cm2. Hot press temperature and time are important factors for low Formaldehyde emission plywood. Thus it is reasonable to increase the press temperature and add the press time.

 

CLEANING AND HANDLING

ILE-50 Low Formaldehyde Emission Resin can easily be washed clean with hot water, and because the free formaldehyde is very low so handling becomes more safe and easy.
