A liquid state thermosetting Melamine Urea Formaldehyde resin which meets all the requirements for a Type I Adhesive. It is recommended for manufacture of of particle board, plywood, veneering, and other kinds of wood working for exterior use which is resistant to high humidity. This resin is specifically designed for use in manufacturing operations on the Asian market.

INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS
Melamine Urea Formaldehyde Resin complies to the following international standards:
UK | : BS-1455 Type BR |
USA | : C-35-36 TypeTechnical and Type I |
Germany | : DIN 16705 Type AW 100, A 100 |
Japan | : JPIC Type I |
RECOMMENDED FORMULATION
Melamine Urea Formaldehyde Resin will achieve best performance if it is being formulated with the following composition:
Melamine Urea Formaldehyde Resin | : 100 parts by weight |
Industrial grade wheat flour as filler | : 17 – 25 parts by weight |
Hardener | : 0.2 – 0.4 parts by weight |
Water | : 0 – 4 parts by weight |
MIXING PROCEDURE
The above recommended formulation is best mixed through the following procedures:
- First pour all of the Melamine Urea Formaldehyde Resin and all of the wheat flour while mixing.
- If the viscosity is too high, a small amount of water can added to the mix.
- Finally pour the Hardener and mix until a homogenous glue mix of desired viscosity is obtained.
POT LIFE OF THE RECOMMENDED GLUE MIX
The formulation above will have a pot life varying depending on environment or room temperature, as follows:
Room temperature | 20°C | 25°C | 30°C | 35°C |
Gel time / pot life | 11 hours | 8 hours | 5 hours | 3 hours |
VENEER PREPARATION
Preparation must be done to the veneers to be glued. The veneers must have a smooth and clean surface, free of dust, glue stains, etc. Avoid using hardwoods since Melamine Urea Formaldehyde Resin is applied to plywood that must have a very high standard of bonding strength. Moisture content of face and back veneers must be controlled at below 12%.
GLUE SPREAD
The usage of Melamine Urea Formaldehyde Resin should employ double glue line, of about 30 – 32 g/sqft for thinner cores and about 35 – 40 g/sqft for thicker cores.
PRE-PRESSURE
The normal pressure is 9 – 10 kg/cm2 and the cold press time is about 15 – 30 minutes, adjustable according to factory conditions.
PANEL ASSEMBLY TIME
Assembly time on panels must be as short as possible. If the process is retarded by factory conditions, the usage of hardeners must be adjusted, that is to be decreased a little bit.
HOT PRESS
– Hot Press Time
The basic hot press time is calculated by room temperature, which is as the following:
Room Temperature | 110°C | 115°C | 120°C | 125°C |
Basic Time | 1.9 minutes | 1.8 minutes | 1.4 minutes | 1.0 minutes |
Additional press time is required according to the distance to the Farthest Glue Line (FGL), as the panel gets thicker, the longer press time it requires. The additional time (minutes/mm) is as follows;
Distance to the FGL | Press Plate Temperature
110°C | 110°C | 110°C | 110°C
Below 5 mm | 1/2 | 1.1 | 1.0 | 0.9 |
5 – 10 mm | 1/4 | 1.3 | 1.2 | 1.1 |
Over 10 mm | 1/6 | 1.5 | 1.4 | 1.3 |
Example: a 3-ply panel with 2 mm inner core and 1 mm face and back veneers, and the FGL is 1.0 mm. The required press time at 120°C is as follows:
Heat transfer time | = | 1.0 minute x 1.0 mm | = | 1.0 minute |
Basic setting time | = | = | 1.4 minutes +
Total pressing time | = | = | 2.4 minutes |
The hot press time to be adjusted by experience according to the factory working condition
– Hot Press Procedure
The optimum pressure on hot pressing of Melamine Urea Formaldehyde Resin is about 9 – 10 kg/cm2.
CLEANING AND HANDLING
Melamine Urea Formaldehyde Resin is easy to handle and washable with warm water. The Formaldehyde smell is relatively less than that of other Formaldehyde glue. This resin’s reactivity is high, therefore it should be stored in a cold place.
